                Daily Stress for College Students

"MONEY, money has been the biggest stress in my life since I began college." states sophomore Dont'e Anderson. “The average student loan debt climbed to $29,400 for borrowers in the class of 2012,” according to an article on USnews.com, “up from $23,450 for 2008 graduates and $18,750 for 2004 graduates.”

Students deal with a lot of stress during their college years  and many career paths and jobs require more than just an undergraduate education these days. The expectation the country has on its students is becoming more and more difficult to achieve.

Along with the financial burden that is causing stress in the lives of college students around America, the social life of most students tend to cause health damaging stress. According to Dr. Gretchen Baldwin of Winthrop University, "Social issues such as relationships and social media websites has caused stressed related health issues on Winthrop's campus."

There are several ways for college students to deal with their stress. You can participate in intramural sports, or join a club, or just go seek counseling.

A study by the American College Counseling Association says, "37.4 percent of college students seeking help in 2012, had severe psychological related illnesses  due to stress." That percentage is up 16% from 2000. According to the Bloomberg Businessweek, the rise in psychological illnesses because of stress has a direct correlation with the constant rise of college tuition in America.

According to “The American Freshman: National Norms Fall 2010,” a survey including more than 200,000 incoming full-time students at four-year colleges, the percentage of students rating themselves as “below average” in emotional health rose.

First year college students are more prone to a stressful life- style in today's society, because of a poor economy, and the constant rise of college tuition. The support system that first year college students received back home in high school is no longer as available as it once was, they tend to struggle with everyday life. For more information please visit the YouTube video "College Freshman Feeling More Stress."
